Having been in the military for so many years I have a stash of emergency gifts. Being an Officer's spouse you are always being invited to various functions. Sometimes you live in places where shopping is abundant and you have no problem finding small gifts. Other times, you have to be very inventive for gifts. Not to mention you usually have a budget to work with and it's usually not very big.
So I decided to share a quick secret with those who are reading my blog. Flowers are nice to bring to a hostess but they don't last. Wine is nice but if you don't know the person well, they might not be a wine drinker. I went to the Dollar Store the other day and ran into these cute oven mitts. Not super on their own but I thought to myself they had a lot of potential.
When I got home I tried putting sets of my cards in the top with some sets of gift tags and with a tag on it itself. Voila - cute gift and I didn't break the bank. If you put in personalized cards you look really organized and thoughtful. If you put in a gift card holder with a gift card to Williams - Sonoma or Crate and Barrel, you continue the cooking theme. Maybe the recipient is a budding chef - include a gift certificate to take a cooking class. If the receiver of the gift is more of a take out type of person, put a gift card to their favorite restaurant.
Other ideas to put inside the oven mitt - store bought mixes for cookies, breads and the like. Maybe take to the hostess of a cookie exchange personalized recipe cards, include a dozen of the cookies. Last year I put simmering potpourri in a jar - that would be a great thing to put inside.
The gist of my gift giving savvy is always having extra things on hand and shopping with gift giving in mind. If you have the key elements on hand you will never be caught off guard. It is always nice to thank the hostess or a friend if they do something above and beyond. Gift cards are great, but a little something besides that really sets your gift apart and shows how thoughtful you can be.
